About Rosso Corsa
Rosso Corsa is a paint that's instantly linked with Ferrari's as it is often nicknamed Ferrari Red. It's the brands well known and most popular shade of red and even their most popular paint, period. It's been available on the standard paint range of all their models for a very long time. It's a non-metallic, bright shade of red which due to its iconic status has also been picked up by other brands like Aston Martin and BMW that offer it on their extended catalogue. The color also has a few variations with a metallic version called Rosso Corsa Metallizzato and a matte version called Rosso Corsa Opaco of this same paint which have only more recently been introduced.
The story of Rosso Corsa
Rosso Corsa translates as racing red. Red was the color allotted to Italian entrants under the national racing-color scheme of the early 1900s, and Ferrari's cars have carried it since the 125 S of 1947 — a car Ferrari itself describes as burgundy rather than bright red. As a road-car paint name it belongs to the Glasurit era from about 1980, under code FER 300; the standard red on the earlier Salchi paint had been Rosso Chiaro. The formula was revised several times (300/6, 300/9, 300/12), each slightly brighter. Ferrari says the 288 GTO was offered only in this shade, and RM Sotheby's cataloged chassis 57709 as Rosso Corsa (FER 300/6) when it sold for €3,263,000 in 2017. Ferrari states that in the early 1990s 85 percent of its cars were red; a sample of the paint flew on ESA's Mars Express mission in 2003. Wikipedia and Grokipedia both trace Italy's red to Prince Scipione Borghese's Itala, which won the 1907 Peking-to-Paris race; Wikipedia adds that the racing color, never officially codified, is generally matched to Pantone 185 C.
